Association Events

RSL Bowls Association hosts a number of events during each year.

These take the form of either goodwill visits to metropolitan and near country venues, selection trials & practice games and the West End State Fours Championship.

Goodwill visits are used to promote the Association to eligible bowlers and to raise funds to assist with the running of the National Carnival when it comes to South Australia.

RSL West End Fours

The West End Fours Championship is a team event played each February.

The event is usually played in one day with teams playing a round robin tournament in at least two sections. Section winners and runners up play for a berth in the Final whilst the non qualifiers play off for a consolation plate.

Lion brewing has sponsored this event since its inception.

Wallaroo Fours

Played in August at South Australia's only truly indoor facility in the delightful seaside town of Wallaroo.

The event is open to all players and is often used as a "season opener" for pennant players.

Excellent facilities for players and visitors with only a relatively short bus ride from Adelaide make this one of our most popular events for members and Adelaide based guests.

Selection Trials

Trial games are held each season to help selectors with their choices of players for the National Carnival.

These games are open to all eligible members and are typically held in December and January.

Most recently, the December trial has been held at Brighton Bowling Club and the January trial at Toorak Burnside Bowling Club.

Carnival Practice Matches

Practice matches for the National Carnival are held at least twice before players go to the Carnival venue. These games are normally played at clubs who field a side to give the RSL side a good match in preparation for the carnival.

They give newly selected players an opportunity to meet others in the side and can be useful in deciding the final make up of teams for the Carnival.

The second practice match is also used as a "get together" where new members are introduced and last minute details relating to the Carnival are passed on to players.

Peter Gillen Triples

A triples format event played over two games at Club Holdfast in September each year.

The games are played between RSL teams and teams representing Club Holdfast. RSL teams can include civilian personnel and Holdfast entrants can be registered pennant players from any club in the state.

Winners are determined on aggregate wins over the two games and players names are added to the Peter Gillen Trophy.

Moonta Memorial Open Fours

Recently added to our calendar, it is intended this will become an annual event played on the Monday of the Adelaide Cup long weekend.

This event is open to non RSL Association bowlers as well as to members of the Association.

Moonta Memorial Bowling Club is a war memorial club with excellent facilities for bowlers and visitors.

RSL Association members and guests play as a side in teams of four against a side fielded by Moonta members and guests.

Sleeper Day

This is an "inter-service" event played annually at the Grange Bowling Club.

Sides are entered by RSL Bowls Association, SA Police Bowls, Customs and Master Builders Association.

The event is played as side matches in a round robin format with the winner decided on aggregate match wins.

The trophy is a section of old railway sleeper with plaques on which the winning sides are engraved, hence the name.

Mannum Fours

Another new addition to our list of goodwill visits promoting the association.

A fun day at the beautiful riverside venue of Mannum Bowling Club.

Played a little differently to other regional visit matches the overall result is not as important as the camaraderie on the day.

We trust this will become a regular fixture in our calendar.

Previous Events

Our event calendar is evolving over time.

In the past we have made goodwill visits to Milang, Ardrossan, Murray Bridge RSL, Payneham and Clearview Bowling Clubs among others.

We are continually on the lookout for a new venue or perhaps a change when circumstances dictate.

Watch this page for new events.
