Slow greens take a toll on SA sides
Queensland played exceptionally well to take both the Jack Hamilton VC and Dr Sydney Krantz trophies at the 56th RSL Bowls Association National Carnival.
Held at the magnificent Tweed Heads Bowling Club (Club Tweed) from May 29 to 31, the Maroons adjusted very well to the slower than usual greens - brought about by months of constant rain, including a cyclone. Victoria ran a creditable second finishing only 7 points behind Qld with NSW taking third spot a further 10 points behind Vic.
Our SA sides did not fare particularly well, finishing in sixth place without a win. Most of our players were unable to adjust to the significantly slower greens which made it that much harder to reach the head when needed.
Congratulations to the teams skipped by Anthony Moffat and Jose Gil, being our most successful teams. It was very encouraging to see our newer travelers do so well. We hope to have them on board for many Carnivals to come.
Whilst our result at Tweed wasn't fantastic, there were some signs that we will be a force in the future. Anthony Moffat pointed out that we really only needed to win two more ends per team per match and we would likely have finished in fourth or possibly even third place. In addition, we need to pay more attention to reaching the head so we don't drop numbers at critical times. We can work on both of these issues before we head to Deer Park next year.
