Phelan reverses last year's result to take the Sir Arthur Lee National Fours championship

Monday afternoon saw the final of the Sir Arthur Lee National Fours Championship played out between last year's finalists.

Once again, Marion Bowling Club provided an excellent green for the match and the weather gods were kind to the players as well.

Most pundits were expecting a tight finish similar to the final in Perth. However, Pat's team got away to a good lead early in the game and were never headed.

A lot of great bowls were played during the game, but despite shot changing bowls played on nearly every end, the Victorian boys were up by 7 shots at the 19th end. Three shots to WA on end 20 put the match within possbile reach for Moose Sweeney's team, but it would have have been surprising had Pat's team let WA score enough for victory on the last.

In the end, Pat Phelan's Victorian team was holding game after Moose played his final bowl, allowing Pat to forego his last turn.

Another successful National Fours Championship which also saw a first time entry team from SA making the quarters and going through to the semi final round. Four states were represented in the semis which was pleasing to see.

Finalists were as follows:

  • Victoria - Jeff Woods, Robert Ward, Gary Ryan and Patrick Phelan (Sk.)

  • WA - Matthew Ngui, Paul Hunter, Murray Piggot and Mike (Moose) Sweeney (Sk.)

Badges and prize money were presented by Irene Shueard, Locations Manager for Simplicity Funerals.
