Robert (Bob) James Uppington passes at age 87
We are saddened to advise that Past President Bob Uppington passed away on Friday 21 June 2024.
Mostly known as "Uppy", Bob was a long term active member of our association. Bob served in the Australian Navy in the 1960s and moved to Adelaide following his discharge, with his wife of 65 years, Mary.
Bob became active in RSL matters and - eventually - succeeded in his advocacy for full recognition by DVA of sailors who crewed ships servicing troops in the Borneo conflict.
Uppy joined the RSL Bowls Association in 1990 and quickly became involved committee work at both state and national levels. Bob served as President, as well as transport officer and other committee roles over his years of service. His service was recognised with a Meritorious service Award in 2002. Bob was also awarded Life Membership of the SA Association during the time that an annual membership applied.
Bob often boasted about the state side being so strong that he couldn't get a game in the Hamilton competition when he first joined. He often told us he had to play in the National Fours Championship for his first two carnivals. We are sure he would be pleased to see the recent influx of new members.
Bob maintained a record of players in each of the carnivals and kept this going even after retiring from the association.
Our condolences to the family including children, grand children and great grand children.
Lest We Forget
